Welcome to the Fahrenheit 451 blog!

The sieve and the sand

Throughout this book we can find many literary devices, next, you will see some examples of the ones that are found in the second chapter of this amazing book!

PERSONIFICATION:

“And the smell of blue electricity blowing under the locked door“ Page 68

This is a personification because the author is telling us the electricity can blow and smell, which are human characteristics.

Feelings: Suspense and cold because of the words blue, blowing and under the locked door.

OXYMORON:

“It was dead but it was alive. It could see but it couldn’t see“ Page 69

This is an oxymoron because the author is using two contradictory terms together in order to confuse the reader. (Dead-alive) (See-couldn’t see)

Feelings: Scared and curious because we basically don’t know anything about what or who is outside the house.

HYPERBOLE:

“The subway fled past him“ Page 74

This is a hyperbole because since the train is going really fast, the author is exaggerating by saying it is flying.

Feelings: Suffocation and adrenaline, because we feel like the train is going so fast that we have to catch up with it.

REPETITION:

“Cream-tile, Jet-black, Cream-tile, Jet-black“ Page 74

This is a repetition because the author is trying to make something clear to us so he repeats the same phrases.

Feelings: Clarified, because we understand and can see better what the author meant which we think is the color of the subway.

ALLITERATION:

“Denham’s Dentifrice, Denham’s Dandy Dental Detergent, Denham’s Dentifrice Dentifrice Dentifrice“ Page 75

This is an alliteration because the beginning sound of these words is the same throughout the whole sentence.

Feelings: Confused and stressed because there is no sense in this sentence and it is also hard to read and write it without getting confused.

SIMILE:

“He’s a regular peppermint stick now, all sugar-crystal and saccharine“ Page 75

This is a simile because the author is comparing a person with a peppermint stick in order to show the personality of this person.

Feelings: Good because we are being told that this person is nice so we kind of start liking him.
